### Contexts of Effective Treatment
#### Therapeutic Alliances
#### Characteristics of clients
#### Personal and professional characteristics of the counsellor
- Self Knowledge
- not a one time thing
- as you go through new experiences, new challenges, you may need to dig deeper
Be aware of:
- own needs
- own feelings
- own anxieties and defenses
- own strengths and weaknesses
*Why is this important?*
- Clients may doubt your abilities
- clients may present with symptoms, stories, or cases which trigger discomfort in you
- DONT have your personal needs met from the client
- IF I have not overcome my anger, how can I help my client overcome theirs?
- IF I have a problem with crying and emotional expression, how can I help my client be more comfortable with expressing their feelings?
What makes me a good answer?
- I’ve gone through my own shit
- I understand how important it is to nurture the courage of a client
- I have a highly analytical, and empathetical nature both at once
- I have a very strong multicultural upbringing, allowing me to view things and understand the nuanced interplays of how family, culture, gender, religion, scioeconomic status, affects a person.
5. Honesty
- clients need to be prepared to hear your honest opinion at times
- not random
- purposeful honest disclosure that may be beneficial to clients
- want to model honesty to clients
6. Strength
- to withstand clients criticism
- especially working with clients who have personality disorders, they will push boundaries
Freedom
the calmness to say no or yes
- not to be imposed upon by guilt
- impulsiveness
- fear
- responsibility
- etc
