Origins + Milestones:
- 1972 Medical school in New Zealand
- 1037 Participants
- Even includes members with capital punishment crimes
- 4 decades of research
- 1.5 thousnda papers published from the study (one every 13 days)
- Stockholm Prize
- fundamental to a lot of WHO recommendations
- 96% participation uptake over time
- Researchers fly participants back to NZ, or fly to meet research participants if relocation is difficult
- Compared to takeup rates of around 50% for most studies
- One criminal participant said: I haven't done very much in life, but i've done this. Researchers noted: indeed this criminal might have done more for the collective good of humanity than those who have lived a completely blameless life.
Major findings:
- C section or left handedness has no affect
Children:
- Five basic personality types:

If there are delays:
first steps in 13-14 months
talking 24 months
then predicts problems later in life such as reading comprehension
children that sleep the least during early years 5-11 became the most obese in adulthood
children that hear voices or see things that arent real have a 50% chance to develop schizophrenia later in life
children that watched the most television = higher cholesterol + cigarette smokers, lower income + job stability + chance of graduating highschool + college degree. Highest TV = 3x more likely to not graduate HS, lowest TV = 4x more likely to graduate + get college degree (irrespective of family income or IQ)
Most powerful predictor of income and success = self control / marshmellow test
low self control = higher divorce, higher homeless, less good with money, higher rates of physical problems = obesity, cholesterol, STDs.
Self control can be taught and trained. Responsive parenthood = firm and consistent improved outcomes. Good peer groups that enforce norms of social behavior also improved outcomes.
